Buying Snow Peak and Japanese Camping Gear in Australia: New, Used or eBay?

This guide contains affiliate links to eBay. See the note at the end.

Quick answer: If you want a new, current Snow Peak item and an Australian store has it in stock, buy it here for local warranty and easy returns. eBay earns its place for the rest: gear that's sold out locally, discontinued, good value used, or cheap enough overseas that the landed cost (price + shipping + 10% GST) is clearly lower.

Japanese camping gear has a loyal following in Australia, from Snow Peak titanium mugs and fire pits to SOTO stoves and NANGA down bags. It's well made, lasts for years and holds its value, which is exactly why it's worth knowing where each kind of purchase makes sense. (It's also why nobody has ever owned just one titanium mug.)

Start with Australian stockists

Snow Peak is sold through Australian retailers, and some other Japanese brands, such as Montbell, have their own Australian online stores. For a new, current-model item that's in stock, buying locally is usually the better deal:

  • No international shipping or import GST to work out
  • Local warranty support
  • Easy returns

So we don't suggest importing a brand-new, in-stock item just because it's Japanese.

Four times eBay makes sense

1. It's sold out in Australia

Popular Snow Peak items sell out locally and can take a while to come back. When we checked Australian stores on 20 October 2026, items such as the Land Nest shelter, a Hexa tarp set, the Single Action Table and a fireplace starter set were out of stock at one major stockist, and the SOTO Windmaster was out of stock at another. Stock changes weekly, but overseas sellers may still have what you're after.

2. You're happy to buy used

A lot of Snow Peak gear changes hands second-hand. On 20 October 2026, eBay Australia showed about 6,800 Snow Peak listings, close to 2,000 of them used. Of the listings that showed a country, Japan was the most common.

Usually a safe used buy:

  • Titanium cups, pots and cooksets: very hard to damage
  • Fire pits and grill tables: heavy steel, made to be used hard
  • Cast iron: at most, needs re-seasoning

Inspect carefully:

  • Tents and shelters: ask for photos of it pitched. Check for missing poles or pegs, peeling seam tape, mould and UV damage.
  • Down sleeping bags: ask how it's been stored. A bag kept compressed for years can lose loft.
  • Stoves: see the gas section below before you buy.

3. It's discontinued

Some well-loved items now mostly turn up second-hand, like the original GigaPower BF stove (GS-300). For these, eBay is often the easiest place to look.

4. The price gap is big enough

Some gear costs a lot more here. On 20 October 2026, the Snow Peak Alpha Breeze tent was A$1,269.95 at an Australian retailer and US$549.95 on Snow Peak's US store. The Land Nest shelter was A$1,199.99 here and US$749.95 in the US.

That gap shrinks once you convert currency and add costs, so work out the landed cost:

overseas price (in A$) + shipping to Australia + 10% GST = landed cost

Only buy overseas if the landed cost is clearly lower and you're happy to give up an easy local return.

Brands that are hard to find here

Two Japanese brands we couldn't find at Australian stores at all:

  • NANGA: down sleeping bags
  • LOCUS GEAR: ultralight shelters, with a wait of several weeks when ordered direct

For these, eBay is one of the easier ways to buy, new or used.

Buying a gas stove from overseas: what to check

Stoves are the one category where a bargain can cost you more than money. Keep it simple:

  • Match the canister. Backpacking stoves such as the GigaPower and SOTO Windmaster use screw-on (threaded) canisters. Some Japanese tabletop "home and camp" burners use CB (cassette) canisters instead. Use only the canister type the stove was built for, and avoid adaptors between types.
  • Know about certification. Australian states and territories require gas appliances sold here to be certified to Australian standards. A stove made for the Japanese or US market may not carry an Australian certification, so if certification matters to you, buy a stove that's certified for Australia from a local store.
  • Inspect used stoves. Check the seal (O-ring) where the canister connects, and that the valve turns smoothly. Skip any stove that's been modified, has a damaged seal or smells of gas when connected.

Our hand-picked list

We keep a small, hand-picked list of Japanese camping gear that's often sold out, discontinued or much cheaper overseas. Each item searches eBay Australia, the US, the UK and Germany at once, new and used:

FAQ

Is it cheaper to buy Snow Peak from the US than in Australia?

Sometimes. On 20 October 2026 the Alpha Breeze tent was A$1,269.95 at an Australian retailer and US$549.95 on Snow Peak's US store, but the gap shrinks once you convert currency and add shipping and 10% GST, so only buy overseas if the landed cost is clearly lower.

Is used Snow Peak gear worth buying on eBay?

Often. Titanium cups, pots and cooksets, fire pits and grill tables, and cast iron are usually safe used buys. Inspect tents and shelters (ask for photos of it pitched), down sleeping bags and stoves more carefully.

Can I use a Japanese camping stove in Australia?

Use only the canister type the stove was built for: backpacking stoves such as the GigaPower and SOTO Windmaster use screw-on canisters, while some Japanese tabletop burners use CB cassette canisters. Australian states and territories require gas appliances sold here to be certified to Australian standards, so if certification matters to you, buy a stove certified for Australia from a local store.

Where can I buy NANGA sleeping bags in Australia?

We couldn't find NANGA (or LOCUS GEAR) at Australian stores at all, so eBay is one of the easier ways to buy them, new or used.

Where can I find the discontinued Snow Peak GigaPower BF stove (GS-300)?

It now mostly turns up second-hand, so eBay is often the easiest place to look. Check the O-ring seal and that the valve turns smoothly before you buy.
