Quick answer: the third-generation Prius (ZVW30) and the Prius Alpha wagon (ZVW40/ZVW41, sold elsewhere as the Prius v or Prius+) share the same 1.8 L 2ZR-FXE hybrid engine, so many engine service parts overlap. Body parts, brakes and above all the hybrid battery don't automatically swap: the 5-seat Prius Alpha (ZVW41) has a nickel-metal hydride pack and the 7-seat (ZVW40) a lithium-ion one. Search with your chassis code and confirm with your frame number.

There are two kinds of people: those who make jokes about the Prius, and those who've seen its fuel bill and stopped laughing. The Prius Alpha is the version for families who want that fuel bill with room for the dog, the pram and the dog's opinions. Both are very common as Japanese imports, and both have quirks worth knowing before you buy parts.
Which Prius do you have?
| Model | Chassis code | Years (Japan) | Engine | Hybrid battery |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Prius, 3rd gen | ZVW30 | 2009–2015 | 1.8 L 2ZR-FXE | Nickel-metal hydride |
| Prius Alpha (5-seat) | ZVW41 | May 2011–March 2021 | 1.8 L 2ZR-FXE | Nickel-metal hydride |
| Prius Alpha (7-seat) | ZVW40 | May 2011–March 2021 | 1.8 L 2ZR-FXE | Lithium-ion |
| Prius, 4th gen | ZVW50 / ZVW51 / ZVW55 | From late 2015 | Updated 2ZR-FXE | Varies by version. Don't assume 30-series parts fit |
Sources: Wikipedia: Toyota Prius v (Japanese 5-seater nickel-metal hydride, 7-seater lithium-ion) and Toyota Japan's Prius Alpha specification sheet (battery type by model code). Your export certificate (the 型式 box) and a quick seat count settle which you have.
Same car, three names: Prius Alpha (Japan), Prius v (North America and Australia), Prius+ (Europe). Overseas parts sold for the Prius v or Prius+ are often a match, but the local versions weren't always the same spec as yours. The Australian Prius v, for example, was sold as a 7-seat lithium-ion car only, and the US one as a 5-seat nickel-metal hydride car only.
Engine service parts: the easy bit
Because the ZVW30 and the Prius Alpha share the 2ZR-FXE, filters and plugs often overlap. Still search with your code, because listings are matched by model.
| Part | Prius 30 | Prius Alpha |
|---|---|---|
| Oil filter | Prius oil filters | Prius Alpha oil filters |
| Spark plugs | Prius spark plugs | Prius Alpha spark plugs |
| Engine air filter | Prius engine air filters | Prius Alpha engine air filters |
| Cabin air filter | Prius cabin air filters | Prius Alpha cabin air filters |
| Front brake pads | Prius front brake pads | Prius Alpha front brake pads |
| Wiper blades | Prius wiper blades | Prius Alpha wiper blades |
Brake pads last ages on hybrids because regenerative braking does a lot of the slowing. That's lovely, until "they never wear out" turns into "nobody's looked at them since the car left Japan". Have them checked anyway, discs and caliper slide pins included.
The hybrid battery: the expensive bit
This is where most Prius buying mistakes cost real money.
- Match the chemistry. A nickel-metal hydride pack and a lithium-ion pack are not interchangeable. On a Prius Alpha, find out which one your car has before you even look at prices.
- New, reconditioned or used? eBay has all three. A used pack from a wrecked car has an unknown history. A reconditioned pack is only as good as the person who reconditioned it, so read the warranty terms, not just the headline.
- Think about postage. Hybrid battery packs are big and heavy, and lithium-ion packs are dangerous goods for shipping, so many sellers only post domestically. A local seller may be the only practical option.
- Get it diagnosed first. A hybrid warning light doesn't always mean the pack is dead. A workshop with a hybrid-capable scanner can tell you whether it's the battery, a sensor or a cooling problem.
Don't forget the battery's cooling fan
The hybrid battery is cooled by a fan that draws air from the cabin. If its intake gets clogged with dust or pet hair, the battery can run hot. Your owner's manual shows where the intake is and how often to clean it.

And the little 12 V battery
Hybrids also carry a small 12 V auxiliary battery. When it's flat the car won't go into "Ready", which looks alarmingly like a much bigger problem and is often a much cheaper one. These are specific to the car, so buy by part number or exact fitment, not by size alone.

How to search eBay for Prius parts
- Start with the code: "ZVW30 cabin filter", "ZVW41 brake pads".
- Try the other names for the Alpha: "Prius v" or "Prius+" plus the part.
- Find the Toyota part number in a good listing and search the number.
- Send your frame number for anything electrical, any brake part and absolutely anything hybrid.
- Compare the landed price. See how GST and VAT get added on eBay.
Import-only fixes
Japanese-market Priuses usually arrive with a radio that misses most local stations and Japanese-only menus. Start with the week-one surprises guide, and check for Japanese recalls by frame number. If you own the Prius's little sibling, see our Toyota Aqua parts guide.

FAQ
Is the Prius Alpha the same as the Prius v?
Yes. Prius Alpha is the Japanese name, Prius v is used in North America and Australia, and Prius+ in Europe. Specs vary by market, so Japanese versions aren't always identical to local ones.
Does the Prius Alpha have a lithium-ion battery?
The Japanese 7-seat Prius Alpha (ZVW40) uses a lithium-ion hybrid battery; the 5-seat version (ZVW41) uses nickel-metal hydride. The two are not interchangeable.
Do Prius 30 parts fit a Prius Alpha?
Engine service parts often overlap because both use the 1.8 L 2ZR-FXE, but body parts, brakes, suspension and hybrid batteries can differ. Search by chassis code and confirm with your frame number.
Can I buy a Prius hybrid battery from overseas on eBay?
Sometimes, but hybrid batteries are heavy and lithium-ion packs count as dangerous goods for shipping, so many sellers only post domestically. Check that the seller will post to your country before you get attached to a listing.
