Nissan Serena C26 & C27 Parts Guide: S-Hybrid, e-Power and Which Parts Fit

This guide contains affiliate links to eBay. See the note at the end.

Quick answer: the C26 Serena (2010–2016) and the C27 (2016–2022) use different chassis codes for petrol, S-Hybrid and e-Power versions, and those versions don't always share service parts. Find the code on your export papers (for example GC27 or HFC27), search eBay with that code plus the part, and send the seller your frame number before buying anything electrical or brake-related.

The Serena is the people mover for people who have opinions about cupholders. It's boxy on purpose, the doors slide, and on the C27 the e-Power version drives like an electric car that brought its own petrol generator to the party, just in case. In Japan it's a very familiar sight on school runs. Out here, it's the van your neighbour imported and now explains at barbecues.

It also comes in more versions than a family group chat has opinions about dinner, so let's sort them out before you buy the wrong oil filter.

Which Serena do you have?

Generation Years (Japan) Chassis codes Powertrain
C26 2010–2016 e.g. HC26 (S-Hybrid) 2.0 L petrol (MR20DD); "S-Hybrid" added August 2012
C27 S-Hybrid 2016–2022 GC27, GFC27 (2WD), GNC27, GFNC27 (4WD) 2.0 L petrol (MR20DD) with Nissan's simple mild-hybrid system
C27 e-Power March 2018–2022 HC27, HFC27 1.2 L petrol (HR12DE) that only generates electricity; the wheels are driven by an electric motor
C28 From late 2022 Different codes 2.0 L petrol or 1.4 L e-Power (HR14DDe). Don't assume C27 parts fit

What "S-Hybrid" actually means

It's not a hybrid in the Prius sense. Nissan's S-Hybrid ("Smart Simple Hybrid") is a mild-hybrid system that helps with idle-stop and restarting the engine. The car is still driven by its 2.0 L petrol engine, so service parts follow the MR20DD.

What "e-Power" actually means

The e-Power Serena is a series hybrid: the 1.2 L three-cylinder engine runs a generator, and an electric motor drives the wheels. It has no plug. It still has an engine, so it still needs oil, filters and spark plugs, just different ones from the 2.0 L cars.

The one-line rule: a C27 with an H at the start of its code (HC27, HFC27) is an e-Power. A C27 with a G (GC27, GFC27, GNC27, GFNC27) is a 2.0 L petrol S-Hybrid. If your papers show anything else, go by the engine code printed there.

The service parts you'll buy most

Part Fit depends on Our page
Oil filter Engine: MR20DD vs HR12DE Serena oil filters
Spark plugs Engine (four plugs on the 2.0 L, three on the 1.2 L) Serena spark plugs
Engine air filter Generation and engine Serena engine air filters
Cabin air filter Generation Serena cabin air filters
Front brake pads Generation, 2WD/4WD, sometimes trim Serena front brake pads
Wiper blades Generation (check lengths) Serena wiper blades

Each page shows current eBay listings from Australia, the US, the UK and Germany. You choose how to sort and filter them.

Wipers tip: measure the blades on your car before ordering, driver and passenger side separately. It's the cheapest fitment check you'll ever do, and the tape measure won't ask for your frame number.

"Highway Star", "Autech" and other words in eBay listings

Japanese sellers list Serenas with the trim name, because in Japan that's how people tell them apart. Highway Star is the sportier-looking trim with its own bumpers and styling, so for body parts (bumpers, grilles, headlights, tail lights) the trim matters as much as the code. For filters and plugs it usually doesn't.

Search like this:

  • Service parts: "HFC27 oil filter", "GC27 cabin filter"
  • Body parts: "Serena C27 Highway Star front bumper", plus "facelift" or "pre-facelift" if you know which you have
  • Electronics: always include the full code and ask the seller to check by frame number

The import-only fixes

The Serena gets the same week-one surprises as every Japanese family car: a radio that misses most local stations, Japanese-only navigation, a TV tuner that will never find a signal, and warnings you can't read. We've rounded them up, with fixes, in 10 surprises every Japanese import owner discovers in week one.

And because it's an import: check for Japanese recalls by frame number. It takes five minutes.

FAQ

Is a Nissan Serena e-Power a plug-in hybrid?

No. The C27 Serena e-Power is a series hybrid with no plug. Its 1.2 L petrol engine (HR12DE) only generates electricity, and an electric motor drives the wheels.

What's the difference between GC27 and HFC27?

GC27 (and GFC27, GNC27, GFNC27) is the 2.0 L MR20DD petrol S-Hybrid. HFC27 (and HC27) is the e-Power with the 1.2 L generator engine. They need different oil filters and spark plugs.

Do C26 parts fit a C27 Serena?

Don't assume so. Some parts carried over, but plenty didn't, and e-Power versions have a different engine altogether. Search by your exact chassis code and confirm with the seller using your frame number.

Do C27 parts fit the newer C28 Serena?

Assume not. The C28 (from late 2022) is a new generation, and its e-Power version uses a different 1.4 L engine (HR14DDe).

Where do I find my Serena's chassis code?

On your Japanese export certificate (the 型式 box), on the model plate in the engine bay or door jamb, and at the start of the frame number stamped on the body. Our model code guide shows where to look.
