Quick answer: match Silvia parts by chassis code and engine, not by "S13" alone. A 1.8 L S13 (CA18DE/CA18DET) and a 2.0 L PS13 (SR20DE/SR20DET) take different engine parts, the 180SX shares a chassis with the S13 but not its front end, and most US "S13" or "S14" listings are for the 240SX with a KA24 engine and left-hand drive. Check the model code on your papers, then search by that code plus engine.

Owning a Silvia means two things. You will never again get a straight answer from a search engine, and every second listing will be for a car that looks like yours but isn't. These cars were sold under at least four names, with three engine families and both steering wheel positions, and eBay sellers use "S13" the way some people use "Tupperware". Here's how to buy the right part the first time.
What do S13, PS13, RPS13, S14 and S15 mean?
They're Nissan chassis codes, and the letters in front of the number tell you more than the number does.
| Code | Car | Years (Japan) | Engine |
|---|---|---|---|
| S13 | Silvia coupé | May 1988 to Jan 1991 (1.8 L) | CA18DE or CA18DET (turbo) |
| PS13 | Silvia coupé | Jan 1991 to Oct 1993 | SR20DE or SR20DET (turbo) |
| RS13 | 180SX hatchback | Mar 1989 to Jan 1991 | CA18DET |
| RPS13 | 180SX hatchback | Jan 1991 to Dec 1998 | SR20DET, plus SR20DE from 1996 |
| S14 | Silvia | Oct 1993 to Nov 1998 | SR20DE or SR20DET |
| S15 | Silvia | Jan 1999 to Aug 2002 | SR20DE (Spec-S) or SR20DET (Spec-R) |

A leading K (KS13, KRPS13 and so on) means the car has HICAS four-wheel steering, according to Wikipedia. That matters for rear suspension and steering parts. The letters before the dash on your papers, such as "E-" or "GF-", are emission prefixes; the part after the dash is what you search with. Our guide to reading Japanese model codes explains the whole string, or paste it into the free model code lookup.
Why does "S13" on eBay so often mean the wrong car?
Because the Silvia itself wasn't exported in this generation. Wikipedia notes that from the S13 on, other markets got rebadged 180SXs instead: the 200SX in Europe and the 240SX in North America. The US is a huge eBay market, so a lot of "S13" and "S14" listings are really 240SX parts.
Three things change between a Japanese Silvia and a US 240SX:
- The engine. The 240SX used the 2.4 L KA24E (S13) or KA24DE (S13 and S14). KA24 filters, gaskets, plugs and sensors are not SR20 parts. Sellers don't always say so in the title.
- The steering side. US cars are left-hand drive. Steering racks, pedal boxes, dashboards, wiper linkages and headlight beam patterns can all differ.
- The trim and electrics. Japanese-market looms, gauges and options don't always match.
Plenty of chassis parts can be shared, such as many suspension arms and bushings. The rule is simple: if a part touches the engine, check the engine code; if it touches the steering wheel side, check the drive side. Our eBay car parts myths guide covers why "fits all S-chassis" is a promise, not a guarantee.
CA18 or SR20: does it matter for service parts?
Yes. If your S13 or RS13 is an early car, it may have the 1.8 L CA18 engine, and CA18 and SR20 engine parts are not interchangeable. That includes head gaskets, timing parts, many sensors and often spark plugs and filters. Check the code on your papers and look at the engine itself before you buy.
| Part | What decides fit | Our page |
|---|---|---|
| Oil filter | Engine (CA18 vs SR20 vs KA24) | S13 · S14 · S15 |
| Spark plugs | Engine and turbo or not | S13 · S14 · S15 |
| Head gasket | Engine (and any engine swap!) | S13 · S14 · S15 |
| Clutch kit | Engine, gearbox and power level | S13 · S14 · S15 |
| Radiator | Engine, manual vs auto | S13 · S14 · S15 |
| Front brake pads | Model, trim and caliper | S13 · S14 · S15 |
| Suspension bushings | Model, HICAS or not | S13 · S14 · S15 |
The engine-swap problem: these cars are decades old and very popular for modifying, so what's under the bonnet may not be what's on the papers. An SR20 in an S13 or a different engine altogether is common enough that it's worth opening the bonnet and reading the engine stamp before you order engine parts. Wikipedia even records an official front-end swap: Kid's Heart built 500 "Sileighty" cars, a 180SX with a Silvia front.
Is a 180SX the same as an S13 Silvia?
Underneath, mostly. The 180SX is the S13-platform hatchback, and Wikipedia says it differed from the Silvia in its pop-up headlights and rear liftgate and bodywork. So headlights, bumpers, guards, the bonnet, the boot or hatch and rear lights are model-specific. Engine, gearbox and many suspension parts follow the S13 rules above: RS13 is the CA18DET car, RPS13 the SR20 car.
The 180SX also ran far longer than the S13 Silvia, until December 1998, with facelifts in January 1991, 1994 and August 1996. Late RPS13 cars got the naturally aspirated SR20DE as an option. A "180SX" listing therefore doesn't settle which body parts fit: compare the seller's photos with your car's front and rear.
What changed on the S14 and S15?
S14: sold in Japan from October 1993 to November 1998, with a styling update in 1996. Owners call the early cars zenki and the later ones kouki. For headlights, tail lights, bumpers and grilles, that split matters more than anything else. The US version was the 240SX with the KA24DE.
S15: the last Silvia, built from January 1999 to August 2002. Wikipedia lists two main grades: the Spec-R with the turbocharged SR20DET and a six-speed Aisin manual, and the Spec-S with the naturally aspirated SR20DE and a five-speed manual, both also offered with a four-speed automatic. So clutch, gearbox and some driveline parts depend on the grade, not just "S15".
The S15 was also sold new in Australia and New Zealand as the 200SX: from May 1999 in New Zealand and October 2000 in Australia. Wikipedia notes the Australian SR20DET was detuned to about 200 PS. Many engine parts are shared with the Japanese car, but tuning and electronics parts can differ, so say which version you have when you ask a seller.
How to search eBay for Silvia parts
- Lead with code plus engine: "PS13 SR20DET oil filter", "RS13 CA18DET head gasket", "S15 Spec-R clutch".
- Add "RHD" or "JDM" for anything near the steering wheel, lights or dash.
- Exclude the wrong engine: eBay lets you exclude a word with a minus sign, so try adding "-KA24" when you want SR20 parts.
- Search the Nissan part number if you can read it off the old part or a good listing. A number match beats every model name.
- Watch for fakes on popular parts. Our RB26 buying guide covers how to spot copies of genuine Nissan parts, and the same tricks apply here.
- Check the landed price with postage and GST or VAT before you compare.

FAQ
What is the difference between S13 and PS13?
Both are the S13-generation Nissan Silvia. S13 is the 1.8 L car with the CA18DE or CA18DET engine, and PS13 is the 2.0 L car with the SR20DE or SR20DET, introduced in January 1991.
Do 240SX parts fit a Silvia or 180SX?
Many chassis parts are shared, but the 240SX used the 2.4 L KA24 engine and left-hand drive. Engine parts, steering parts and anything tied to the dashboard or headlight pattern may not fit a Japanese-market car.
Is a 180SX the same as a Silvia?
The 180SX shares the S13 platform but is a hatchback with pop-up headlights and different rear bodywork. Engine and many suspension parts follow the S13 or PS13 rules, while lights and body panels are model-specific.
What engine does an S15 Silvia have?
The S15 Spec-R has the turbocharged SR20DET with a six-speed manual, and the Spec-S has the naturally aspirated SR20DE with a five-speed manual. Both were also offered with a four-speed automatic.
What do zenki and kouki mean on an S14?
They are Japanese for early and late. The S14 had a styling update in 1996, so zenki and kouki cars need different headlights, tail lights and some bumpers and grilles.
